Jagdish Mehra: My first meeting with Paul Dirac took place in Cambridge in 1955. I had just returned to England after a couple of years with Heisenberg in Gottingen. A historian friend of mine in Cambrigde, knowing of my great hero worship for Dirac, offered to take me with him to St. John's College, which was also his college, and to dine at the High Table. He thought we might see Dirac there. I went with him, and true to his word, he showed me that Professor Dirac was sitting there. We sat down. The weather outside was very bad, and since in England it is always quite respectable to start a conversation with the weather, I said to Dirac, 'It is very windy, Professor.' He said nothing at all, and a few seconds later he got up and left. I was mortified, as I thought that I had somehow offended him. He went to the door, opened it, looked out, came back, sat down, and said, 'Yes.'
